Psoriasis is a condition in which skin cells build up and form scales and dry patches that are itchy. Triggers include infections, stress and cold. There is no cure, but the good news is that over the summer, people who have psoriasis can find some relief beyond the usual topical ointments, medications and light therapy. The condition also needs special care during warm weather.
At the office of Angelic Medi Spa, our elite team of professionals has the ability, focus and flexibility to demonstrate unparalleled professional knowledge. In addition to our high-quality, comprehensive dermatological care, our environment is welcoming and focused on our patients.
Though patches of psoriasis tend to hurt and itch, many sufferers find that, thanks to the sun’s ultraviolet light, their condition improves over the summer. Sunbathing can help; start with only a few minutes and work your way up to amount of time recommended by your dermatologist. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 30 SPF on areas without psoriasis to protect them from damage and burning.
Warm weather is helpful also because you can wear lightweight clothing, which exposes your skin to fresh air. If you don’t have open sores, spend time in a pool, lake or ocean, as it helps some people’s hard or crusty skin patches soften and clear up.
You can also take measures to avoid summertime flare-ups.
After a dip in a pool, lake or ocean, shower off possible irritants, and moisturize your skin with a lotion or cream.
As much as people love summer’s warmth, they aren’t enamored with its mosquitos and other insects. Bites that cause itching are worse for folks with psoriasis. Employ insect repellents such as skin sprays, citronella candles, bug zappers and mosquito coils, and stay indoors when the tiny critters are most active. And steer clear of poison ivy and poison oak. Their aggravating oils can trigger flare-ups.
